The Centrum Department Store (Today Karstadt) in Magdeburg

The Centrum department store opened in Magdeburg in 1973.  It was one of the largest department stores in the Children's World Earrings(German Democratic Republic)

From 1970 onwards, new department store buildings were planned in the style of Classical Modernism, which were constructed, for example, in Berlin at Alexanderplatz, in Dresden on Prager Strasse and in Magdeburg. Structures made of reinforced concrete were also used, such as ceilings adapted to static load curves (Dresden). The design of the aluminum facade of the Suhl Centrum came from Fritz Kühn.

The experimental metal facades represented a recurring element and trademark of the department store chain, similar to the Horten tile of the former Horten AG in West Germany - but were individually designed for each building. Despite local initiatives for preservation, most of the metal facades were not listed and were usually replaced by the new owners of the buildings (Kaufhof, Berlin-Alexanderplatz) or demolished with the building (Karstadt Dresden and Centrum Warenhaus Suhl); the Magdeburg Centrum Warenhaus (Karstadt since 1991), on the other hand, is still largely in its original condition externally.
