HOTEL SALYUT - A MASTERPIECE OF BRUTALISM ARCHITECTUR

So what is the thing that makes Salyut Hotel rank in a different category of Brutalism Architecture is its History, Design, and present shape. So let’s uncover all the unveiled features one by one.

The History

The History of the Salyut Hotel is quite dramatic which altered the shape of the project from a Skyscraper to what it looks like today. When the project was launched it was an innovation in the construction industry which was going to be a splendid skyscraper whose proposed elevation is also present below but due to interaction between the architectural views and the bureaucratic party the splendid building is no longer a skyscraper.

Now

The present shape of the Hotel Salyut is due to the issues between the party leadership and the authors, the thing that made the project less than a half of its proposed plan was the collective refusal of the party leadership to add the author in the party curator which ultimately affected the budget and funds of the project and due to that the implementation of the project started to decelerate and resulted in the today’s smaller shape despite the truth that the foundation has been designed for much higher construction.

As all of us are architects so it’s our utmost duty to do our best to save the project so it is what the architects of that time did, they tried their best to save the project and developed numerous variations during and before the building process which was very necessary to balance the disproportionate capacity of the stylobate. Today’s amazing form of the Hotel is resulted due to the collisions between architecture and power and we have to appreciate the Architects whose efforts have revived the project in a beautiful way.

Now let’s unveil the important facts about the design of the project and with that, we will also discuss the pros and cons of the present design.

This project is a beautiful concept of the atom design in which there is a nucleus and the other parts of the atom are revolving around the nucleus, similar case is here in this building and here instead of using the steel cables to support the slab, there are 19 Reinforced Concrete Walls between the rooms that go in a cantilever way with lift walls and circular ramp from the nucleus which is at the center.

As the walls between the rooms are R.C.C. thus this has lead to a problem in the expansion of the rooms and thus this thing has made the hotel rooms to limited sizes in which they designed and cannot meet the requirements of today’s needs of big rooms thus up to some extent the hotel was not effective from the beginning.

The Salient Features of the Hotel are as follows:

  1. The Hotel was designed in 1976-1982 which was almost 25 years after the introduction of Brutalism Architecture.
